2015 Hall of Fame Ballot is Out

The BBWA Hall of Fame ballot was just released. There are 17 guys remaining from the old ballot. Here’s that list:

Biggio, Piazza, Bagwell, Raines, Clemens, Bonds, Lee Smith, Schilling, Edgar Martinez, Trammell, Mussina, Kent, McGriff, McGwire, Walker, Mattingly, Sosa.

And here’s the list of the 17 new guys appearing for the first time:

Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Smoltz, Delgado, Sheffield, Garciaparra, Percival, Aurilia, Aaron Boone, Tony Clark, Dye, Erstad, Floyd, Giles, Tom Gordon, Guardado, Jason Schmidt.

The holdover list is in order of votes in the 2014 balloting. The new list is in the order I found it on NBC News website. My take later.

I’m surprised Jeff Kent isn’t on anyone’s radar…wasn’t he the best hitting second baseman of all time? I know he wasn’t the most social guy so that may be an issue for the crybaby baseball voters, but he should get bonus points for punking Bonds.

And speaking of guys with awfully good numbers and questionable social skills…Gary Sheffield? You look at what he put on the board number-wise, and you just can’t dismiss him out of hand.

I’ll go R.J. and Pedro this year (should be interesting seeing them standing side-by-side, a foot difference in their height.)
Smoltz in another couple of years. And I’ll take the first four from the holdover list. Six inductions in one year would be quite an accomplishment for these voters.
Incidentally, Brian Giles was a very underrated player, sort of the Indian Bob Johnson of his era.

I’ m glad Gary mentioned Jeff Kent. I took a look at his numbers and was surprised all over again. And Bill pointing out Randy and Pedro side by side…that’s gonna be something!!! We’re kind of excited here in Montreal because Pedro has a habit of remembering where he started.
